Wow...and I thought I was the only one that thought this show was a waste of time. I was up till 2am watching this and was so pissed when I saw the "monuments". Talk about anti-climatic.
Please realize that our objection to Turner's fantasy is not an attack on the Maya and their culture. All of us who bothered to watch this long, boring program are keenly interested in the Maya. As an Oklahoma Seminole, I have always valued Native American culture and achievements. But preposterous claims with no evidence whatsoever do not enhance the history or even the romance of the Maya. We do know that the Maya did not have sea-worthy vessels comparable to the double-hulled canoes of the Polynesians. We do know that the archeological studies, including pollen studies, show no human presence in the Juan Fernandez islands before the Spanish came. I find Turner's silly claims deeply insulting to the Maya and those who seriously study their accomplishments.
The Maya were not sea oriented like the Taino of the Caribbean or the Mapuche of Chile, especially not on the Pacific side.
